a lover's prayer

a lover's prayer

a lover's prayer

must be boisterous

and desperate.

-

earthy as rooibus tea.

jagged as the face

of cadillac mountain,

-

it's shallow breath

a mix of ecstasy and panic.

you don't speak it

so much as it speaks you.

-

it teems with overripe cherries

and fried habaneros.

-

its lacy thong not quite

covers the vestigial tail.

-

it must be written in

the dim light of a waning moon.

it must weave dark promise

with inchoate angst,

in strands. like dna.

like hair of the madonna.

-

a lover's prayer

should melt

like rocky road

on a summer day,

drip into pavement,

become one with the street,

-

stick to our soles the

next time we sally forth.
